Transactional email pricing, normalized
Amazon SES à la carte is the cheapest published cloud rate ($0.10 per 1,000 emails → $1 / $10 / $100 at 10,000 / 100,000 / 1,000,000). New SES accounts default to Essentials ($0.16 per 1,000) after 21 Jul 2026 unless you switch back to à la carte. Self-hosting Postal on a Hetzner CX23 is $6.49/month if you will run an MTA. Productized ESPs start at $15 (Postmark Basic / Mailgun Basic for 10,000) or $20 (Resend Pro, which includes 50,000). Resend Scale is $650 for 1,000,000; Postmark and Mailgun overage at that size is about $1,080–$1,206.
Prices from each provider's official pricing page, checked 17 Oct 2026. USD, excluding tax. Worked examples are email volume only — dedicated IPs are a separate column and are not added unless the plan includes one. "Not published" means the page did not list that number. Estimates, not guarantees.

Best for
- Resend
A developer API with a $20 floor once 3,000/month is not enough, and $650 when you actually send 1,000,000.
- Postmark
Transactional mail with a $15 floor at 10,000 and published overage, when you want Postmark's streams.
- SendGrid
50,000–100,000/month on Essentials, or Pro when you need the included dedicated IP.
- Mailgun
A $15 floor at 10,000, or Scale at $90 when 100,000 and an included dedicated IP matter.
- Amazon SES
The lowest published per-email rate when you will operate SES yourself and switch off Essentials if you were defaulted onto it.
- Brevo
Marketing + transactional on one bill when the $9 Starter floor is enough and you do not need a published 10,000/100,000 SKU.
- Postal (self-hosted)
An MTA you operate when $6.49/month beats a $650–$1,200 ESP bill and you will do DNS, rDNS, and warmup.
- listmonk (self-hosted)
A newsletter/list you host. Transactional app mail still needs Postal or an ESP.
A $0.10/1,000 meter vs a $15 floor vs a mail server you run
À la carte Amazon SES is a pure meter: $0.10 per 1,000 outbound emails, no monthly floor. After 21 Jul 2026, new SES accounts (and account×region pairs with no metered SES activity since 1 Jun 2025) start on Essentials at $0.16 per 1,000 for the first 10 million emails. You can switch to à la carte. That is the right shape when you will configure IAM, DKIM, and bounce handling yourself.
Productized ESPs sell a plan floor plus overage. Postmark Basic and Mailgun Basic are $15 for 10,000 emails. Resend has no 10,000 SKU — Pro is $20 for 50,000 or $35 for 100,000. Twilio SendGrid Essentials starts at $19.95 for 50,000 (no 10,000 SKU). Dedicated IPs are usually an add-on or a higher plan: Resend $30 on Scale above 3,000 emails/day, Postmark from $50 at 300,000+/month on Pro+, Mailgun $59 extra (one included at 100,000+), SendGrid one included on Pro, SES Standard $24.95/IP-month.
Self-hosting Postal is $0 for the MIT-licensed software plus the VPS. A Hetzner CX23 is $6.49/month (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 40 GB NVMe / 20 TB traffic, USD excl. VAT, after the 15 Jun 2026 adjustment). You own DNS, rDNS, warmup, and blocklists. listmonk is an AGPL newsletter box, not an MTA — you still pay an SMTP provider (or run Postal). That is the right shape for a list you host, not for app password-resets on their own.
