FAQ
- What is the best free open-source Thinkific alternative?
- The best open-source alternative to Thinkific is Moodle (or Open edX) with Canvas LMS, self-hosted on Railway. A classroom you host. Moodle is GPL-3.0; Open edX and Canvas LMS are AGPL-3.0 — Teachable, Thinkific, and Kajabi without the course-platform seat.
- Is it free?
- The Moodle / Open edX licenses are open source or fair-code. You still pay hosting (Railway or any VPS) and any APIs the stack calls. There is no Thinkific seat or task bill on this path.
- Can I migrate from Thinkific?
- Yes. Start with the workflows or data you actually use, then cut over. The Moodle / Open edX stack page has the agent prompt and the cost table; most teams rebuild the slice that matters and leave old Thinkific links until they expire.
- How do I deploy it?
- Open the Moodle / Open edX stack, copy the agent prompt, and deploy on Railway (one service, PORT, and a volume when the app needs disk). Placeholder: Moodle (PHP + MariaDB) or Open edX (several services) plus a volume. Canvas LMS is the other AGPL classroom. This is not a one-click marketing OS. No template in this repo yet — Start on Railway. Memberships stay on /stacks/ghost-cms.
- What does this replace?
- Teachable / Thinkific / Kajabi. The published small-team estimate on this stack is $2,400 a year.
