Open-source alternative
Replace Twilio with LiveKit / Jitsi
The best open-source alternative to Twilio is LiveKit (or Jitsi) with n8n, self-hosted on Railway. Realtime voice and video you host. LiveKit and Jitsi are Apache-2.0. SMS still needs a carrier — this page does not pretend otherwise.
Estimated save $2,400 a year.

How Twilio compares
| Twilio | LiveKit / Jitsi | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Hosted subscription | Open-source or fair-code license; you pay the host |
| Hosting | Vendor cloud | Self-hosted on Railway or any VPS |
| Rough monthly cost | Public list price not verified this run | Hosting only — no SaaS seat meter in this repo |

- Jitsi

- n8n
Webhooks and notification routing — not an SMS carrier
FAQ
- Is it free?
- The LiveKit / Jitsi licenses are open source or fair-code. You still pay hosting (Railway or any VPS) and any APIs the stack calls. There is no Twilio seat or task bill on this path.
- Can I migrate from Twilio?
- Yes. Start with the workflows or data you actually use, then cut over. The LiveKit / Jitsi stack page has the agent prompt and the cost table; most teams rebuild the slice that matters and leave old Twilio links until they expire.
- How do I deploy it?
- Open the LiveKit / Jitsi stack, copy the agent prompt, and deploy on Railway (one service, PORT, and a volume when the app needs disk). Placeholder: LiveKit server (or Jitsi) plus TURN if you need it. SMS is not a Railway one-click. Notification workflows can sit on /stacks/n8n-automation.
- What does this replace?
- Twilio. The published small-team estimate on this stack is $2,400 a year.
